Siegfried Zollner’s study of the religion of the Yali people in the Eastern Highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, presents a colourful insight into their worldview. Yali religion has a two layered structure: the first is the “primeval pig” corpus of myths. It is expressed in the initiation ritual and aims to stabilise community. The second is that of the Yeli (tree of life) mythology and its realisation in the Salem healing ritual which is performed by medicine men; its objective is to heal individuals.
